Reasons

In 2007, UAFOSS takes the Open Source Development Network Conference (which is conducted in Kyiv for 6 years and in which 250 to 300 persons participate regularly) to a new organization level.

This initiative is related to a number of factors.

First – it is a rapid increase of the potential market around Free/Open Software services.

Second – it is the tightened position of proprietary companies (companies that produce “closed” software) which prosecute users of non-licensed software more and more actively on the local market.

Third – it is the work on structuring the UAFOSS network which plans to open representative offices in all regions of Ukraine in the nearest year or two, to establish a reliable network of support for FOSS (Free/OpenSource software) users, as well as to distribute FOSS products and services across the country.

Fourth – it is the catastrophic situation which last in the state sector of Ukraine where there is practically no information about the Free/Open Source software, but where “proprietary” programs of "informatization" are impossible to implement due to a number of reasons.

In 2007, beside the professional conference, we also plan to have a number of subject-matter actions with the purpose of popularization of the idea of wide use of FOSS in the state and educational sectors, as well as educational and explanatory actions designed for the widest range of informational service consumers.

It is the last aspect which is related to the fact that we invite not only software developers, but also the leading suppliers of computer hardware to our FOSS-target exhibition. (Note please that the exhibition with such theme is held in Ukraine FOR THE FIRST TIME, and we suppose that it would occupy a place of more formalized foreign Linux-exhibitions in the country by means of attracting the most trained and professional FOSS community inside the country). The only condition shall be operation and demonstration of FOSS class software only.

At that, we are especially interested in developing companies which may demonstrate subject-matter solutions (information systems and equipment for the governmental sector, business, civil services of the city, education, information privacy solutions etc.).

For distribution companies, UAFOSS is ready to provide both the Free Software which would demonstrate the full power of modern computer technology, and the business contacts for growing its regional distribution network over UAFOSS regional network, which is being developed actively and supports Free/Open source hardware and software solutions. The latter aspect shall be of especial interest for manufacturer
